When Phones Stayed Home

"When Phones Were Heavy and Stayed Home." 24 x 24 acrylic
I have a list of 1300 painting titles. They have been extremely helpful in developing a path to a finished painting. What to emphasize? (Darken the phone poles.) How to enhance this? (My pet crow on the phone line?) What Design Strategy will best emphasize those now-dark poles? Evening coming and a street light? Remember how we used to stay out until the street lights came on? I'd love to do a book on my titles list. They have given me so much content over the years.

This painting is done from a photo of the first day of school in the early 1950's. Since I've been thinking about the old friends, two of them have contacted me. Isn't that strange? I've called it "The Baby Boomers."

Monday People

Teaching in NYC last week, I got a few photos of these people. The safety vests and everyone else in black made for a dazzling, out of my series, painting subject.
But never one to leave a fine painting alone I tipped the people by cutting the paper cockeyed and making a few leaning marks in the figures. A more dynamic painting.

Friends in High Places

I started this painting with my title/concept and it grew from there. Painting idea upon idea, the mystery of this painting is just beginning to reveal itself.

Don't Turn Back

I have been tinkering with this painting for a year, and, thanks to Miami artists, the idea of a phone pole with traffic signs on it has created a whole new dimension to my street sign motif. Just think of the commentary that I can introduce to future paintings!

Crazy Kids

Yesterday I sold "The Optimist and the Pessimist" (the painting of the girl jumping off a dock) to a woman who said she used to RIDE HER BIKE full speed off of their dock! We were all crazy kids after all.Great to be able to relate to people on such a visceral level.
